Fedex Cup Week 2 - Deutsche Bank Preview

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Tiger and Deutsche Bank CEO at pro-am

Just hand me the trophy now, says Tiger. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Most if not all will show up for this year’s Deutsche Bank in Boston (MA) starting on Friday for the second round. The most notable absentee is Ernie Els who flew home to see his kids off to school instead. Tiger Woods, aka the PGA Tour, will be there and yes, he is the overwhelming favorite so that he can slap his name on the winner’s trophy like everything else he owns. So who will be there to challenge world supremacy? Phil Mickelson for one. Jump on the link to see my picks.

Saturday is Patriot Golf Day

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

An initiative by the PGA of America, Sat Sept 1 will be the first Patriot Golf Day. With more than 2600 golf facilities participating, the inaugural event will pay tribute to those at war. The event was inspired by a former soldier,

Patriot Golf Day founder Rooney is an F-16 pilot in the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, who has logged two tours of duty to Iraq and is scheduled for a third tour in 2008. Rooney spends approximately 10 days a month flying. He is also in the process of establishing The Fallen Heroes Foundation, which will pay for the education of a spouse and/or children of a fallen or wounded soldier.

If you don’t have big plans (or even if you do), should be a good event to get to, just find a golf facility near you.

My Deutsche Bank picks later today…

Tiger Gets Ready For Football Season

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

This is just an outtake from a NIKE commercial, but Tiger probably could’ve played linebacker at Stanford, especially considering the sad state of Cardinal football the last several years.

Are You Ready For Some Football

Would You Hit Driver Off The Deck?

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

This clip shows a guy with a very nice swing hitting a series of shots with his driver off the deck. I wouldn’t recommend for you high-handicappers as it is a very difficult shot to hit. But if you have a good swing like the guy in this video, it is a very handy shot to have, especially into the wind or on long par 5’s.

Tiger Opens the NYSE

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

TW opens the NYSE

Tiger rings the famous bell at the NYSE

Tiger Woods took a tour of NYC to promote one of his main sponsors, Deutsche Bank, who are also the main sponsor of the upcoming PGA Tour stop in Boston. Maybe TW can turn the market slump around, damn, my 401K is dropping like Rory Sabbatini on a Sunday round.

Life is good for TW, ringing the bell at the NYSE (one of my todo’s on my list of things to do), promoting the launch of EA Sports TW 2008, the golf video game in his name.

If I could trade my life with Tiger’s, just for one day. I’m not asking for a year, just one day. Ahhh, keep dreaming I guess…

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage…

Sorenstam w/ Mike Mcgee at the Espys

Sorenstam’s new man, Mike McGee

You know what’s next, babies, and more babies. Annika and her fiance announced today they will be getting married. Could this be the end of the Annika dynasty?? Very few women have come back from motherhood to really play at the level they were prior to motherhood. Case in point, Lindsay Davenport in tennis, recently retired as she said her body has changed following pregnancy. I’m not saying that should Annika become a mother that it would be impossible for her to regain her previous form, but it would be tough. Juli Inkster is probably the rare example of where a mother can compete at the highest level. Plus Annika has publicly said she wants to focus on her golf school soon.

Solheim Cup Teams Finalized

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Your Solheim Cup teams,

Team USA:

Paula Creamer
Cristie Kerr
Morgan Pressel
Juli Inkster
Stacey Prammansudh
Pat Hurst
Natalie Gulbis
Brittany Lincicome
Angela Stanford
Sherri Steinhauer
Nicole Castrale *
Laura Diaz *
Betsy King - U.S. Team Captain

Team Europe:

Annika Sorenstam (Sweden)
Laura Davies (England)
Trish Johnson (England)
Gwladys Nocera (France)
Catriona Matthew (Scotland)
Suzann Petterson (Norway)
Sophie Gustafson (Sweden)
Becky Brewerton (Wales)
Bettina Hauert (Sweden)
Iben Tinning * (Denmark)
Linda Wessberg * (Sweden)
Maria Hjorth * (Sweden)
Helen Alfredsson (Sweden) - European Team Captain

There is some bickering about whether Christina Kim would’ve been a better selection than Nicole Castrale. I think that’s debatable. Yes, Kim is loud and obnoxious and a major pain to play against in match play due do that, but Castrale has the results this year, she’s the better player.

There’s No Crying in Golf

Morrison cries a river after losing at the NCAAs

Adam Morrison, one of the great criers of all time.

Upon winning his first tournament since 2001, Steve Stricker was reduced to tears on Sunday following a 2-under round with 4 straight birdies to cap off the week. If you want drama, there’s nothing like watching a grown man breakdown and bawl his eyes out like a 5-year-old over a game. Like when Heinz Ward won the Superbowl MVP or Wayne Gretzky getting traded from Edmonton or all those Dick Vermeil moments. Add Stricker to that list of bawlers who play the crying game.

Well, maybe I’m being a bit harsh, but in any case, congrats to Steve. I thought he’d have to get to 4-under or so, but KJ Choi couldn’t put enough pressure on Steve, especially late. Mark Calcavecchia and Phil Mickelson had great rounds but were too far back to challenge.

Now that the first round of this Fedex Cup thing is in the books, the real deal gets on the way next week when Tiger Woods steps up. Who’s going to challenge him? Does anyone care?

Mexico Wins Again

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Mexico rocks

Ochoa was a force all week. GO MEXICO!!! (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

Can anyone stop her?? Doesn’t appear to be. Lorena Ochoa is so hot right now, she’d could play one-handed with her eyes closed and still win. I think its safe to say she’s replaced Annika as the most dominant player in women’s golf.

After winning her first major at the British Open, she came back to N. America and won the Canadian Open and now winning the Safeway Classic.

She’s taking a month off though so we won’t be seeing a fourth in a row.

Beemer Likes The Sound of His Own Voice

Rich Beem sings happy birthday to himself and says he hates the word “playoffs”. I don’t know about you, but Richie comes across as a pompous asshole, you be the judge…

US Amateur Final Goes Today

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

So you’re not feelin’ the Fedex Cup, playoff thingamijig, that Tim Finchem has going on?? Check out the final match later on Sunday for the US Amateur on NBC. Colt Knost and Michael Thompson (remember, they are amateurs so of course you’ve never heard of them) duel it out for the 36-hole match-play final to determine the winner.

I’d have to say, that the US Amateur is probably the most grueling, and toughest golf tournament to win in the world. The players need to win 6 straight, that’s tough. To stay on top of your game for six straight grueling rounds is definitely not easy. Props to whoever comes out on top.

Stricker Seeks First Win

Stricker in pole position for Sun

Stricker feelin’ the heat. (AP Photo/Ed Betz)

Steve Stricker made the biggest move on moving day with a 6-under 65 to get to 14-under for the tournament and the outright lead at the Barclays in New York. KJ Choi led for most of Saturday, but Steve just kept knocking down shots and making putts.

Another man on the move was Hunter Mahan, he had another magical round to get to 12-under after shooting a 9-under 62, wow. Lets see if the Hunter can follow-up with a good round and not see it go to waste like he did a few weeks ago.

Then, there was Rich Beem. A promising round earlier in the week continued to a solid 69 on Saturday to stay within 2.

Yes, all the pressure is now on Steve. He’s had problems closing in the past so we’ll see if he can hold on. This is a tough field with someone likely to surge so Steve will need to shoot a 4 or 5-under to get to 18 or 19-under to win it I believe.
