All The Pressure On Sergio

Friday was suppose to be moving day, but frankly there was very little movement among the leaders, and there were plenty of movers the wrong way. Sergio Garcia remains in the lead with a par round staying at 6-under. KJ Choi is second at 4-under overall. The low round of the day goes to Canadian Mike Weir with a 68. The Leaders
Sergio played in the morning so I only really saw the highlights, most of which showed him making par saving putts. Crucial, because I think he was a little wild off the tee due to the wind. The title of this post says it all, the pressure is squarely on Sergio now, to see if he can close this thing out. He’s halfway there, but he needs two of the best rounds of his life to get the biggest win of his career to date. The signficance of a win here cannot be understated. Much like when Phil won the Masters for his first major, a win here for Sergio would be career defining. It will literally change his life forever, he needs this one bad. How’s that for pressure…
I thought Paul McGinley would drop and he did. The amateur, Rory McIlroy dropped as well, but good on him to make the cut.
KJ Choi just won’t go away, he’s so resilient. He refused to let bad shots affect his round. He can get hot in a hurry, and I expect him to challenge Sergio both on Saturday and Sunday.
Mike Weir has a new swing and it seems to be working for him. He likes to come back (has always come back in his previous wins) so if history were to repeat itself, he will come back to win on Sunday.
Miguel Angel Jimenez could make it a spanish on spanish battle. Miguel reminds me a bit of Woody Austin, he’s so hard on himself, how will he react if he has a bad hole? Will it get to him?
A couple of Americans, Jim Furyk and Boo Weekley sit together at 2-under. Angel Cabrera lingers at 1-under.
Tiger Woods
His first shot off the tee didn’t get good contact with the clubhead and it was all downhill from there. I was watching him at 2-under at one moment, I go and grab breakfast, all of a sudden he’s at 1-over. His putting has been OK, but he couldn’t hit a fairway if his life depended on it. Unless Sergio has a monumental collapse, Tiger won’t be winning his third Claret Jug.
Phil Mickelson
Well, what can you say, Phil missed the cut. Had a double-bogey on 18, just a terrible day. Phil joins Monty and JD in the early exits.
The Rest of My Team
I haven’t had a strong week like this I think since I started here at Golf Talk. Sergio is still leading, Angel is 7th, Pat Perez had a bounce back day. Tiger is my worst player and he’s 26th.
Other Notes
Retief Goosen is playing decent. Stewart Cink was at 3-under at one point but dropped a few shots in the last few holes.
They say the weather is taking a turn for the worst both Saturday and Sunday. That will affect Sergio more than anyone I think, especially if there is a weather delay.
Anyways, enjoy the golf watching, it’s going to rain all weekend here in Vancouver, perfect for golf viewing…
