British Open Purse Increases

This article appearing on Bloomberg outlines the increase at this year’s British Open at Carnoustie by 5 percent to 4.2 million pounds ($8.5 million).

It’s the first increase in three years. This makes it the richest of all four major tournaments.

I believe the European Tour officials had something to do with this. They want to make their Tour more relevant and one way of doing that is to increase prize money. I still don’t think it will make that much difference though, overall, the PGA Tour still has all the big money events.
