Canadian Open Preview

Mark Calcavecchia loves Canada.
Suffering from a little British Open hangover, it’s easy to forget about that little tourney we like to call the Canadian Open happening this week at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham (ON). Just like the rest of us, many of the big names forgot about it too and are thus not joining in on the fun. Regardless, a number of talented pros like Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh will be on hand and I’ll let you all in on my picks, jump on the link below to read away.
A List
Hard to go against Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh. But some doubt lingers as Jim hasn’t won at all this year and Vijay is as consistent as oil and water together. I’m starting Jim because well, he’s consistent and should be among the top ten leaders at the end of the first round (I would be shocked if he didn’t).
Other good picks for your A list include canadians Mike Weir and Trinidad native Stephen Ames. I likes Stephen better than Mike because he’s more resilient. Mike doesn’t play well when the pressure is squarely on him (see 2004 collapse at the Canadian Open).
B List
John Rollins, Camillo Villegas, Chris DiMarco, Steve Flesch.
Johnny boy won this thing back in 2002 at Angus Glen so he gets the default nod there. Plus he’s been rolling it pretty good all year, just no wins.
Camillo is well, Camillo. He’s an incredible ball-striker and if he can find some kind of rhythm out there, he could be dangerous.
I like Chris because he’s a tough guy and this course has been supposedly toughened up by DL3. He’s still got that new putting grip that has led to some recent success like at the British Open last week.
Steve Flesch, only because he seems to be a popular pick among the roto experts this week, we’ll see how that pans out…
C List
The C list looked quite promising for this week. I saw several names that I liked but alas could only pick two, going with Mark Calcavecchia and Hunter Mahan.
Calc always plays well in Canada, don’t know if he likes the water up here or something, but he’s won here often and done well in the past. I don’t see why he doesn’t continue that trend, and he’s having a decent year to boot. He should actually be on the B list if you ask me.
Hunter Mahan is having a terrific year, has 4 top ten finishes and recently won the Travelers Championship a little bit ago. He also finished T-6 last week at the British Open.
I some other good names like Bubba Watson or Brandt Snedeker. My personal opinion is that someone from the C list will win this week.
TV coverage will be the usual Golf Channel on Thu/Fri and CBS on Sat/Sun.
PGA Tour, Canadian Open, Jim Furyk
