Playoff Duels, Hunter And Ochoa Prevail

Monday, June 25th, 2007

The first time is always the sweetest.

Hunter Mahan and Jay Will went toe-to-toe on Sunday as final round leaders and with the score tied at the end of 18, they went to a sudden death playoff. A brilliant approach shot left Hunter with a tap-in for birdie and the win over Jay Williamson for the Travelers Championship just outside of Hartford (CT). On the LPGA, Lorena Ochoa came from behind to force a playoff and win in sudden death to take the Wegmans in upstate NY. (more…)

Jay Will Stays Hot

Don’t worry Jay, you’re still in the lead.

I’ll keep this short and sweet since it’s late, I’m tired and I have an early tee time tomorrow (yippee). Jay Williamson continued his strong play through on Saturday carding a 3-under-par 67 to lead the Travelers Championship at 11-under. Hunter Mahan rebounded and is one-back. David Toms is all by himself at third and two-back. My boy Justin Rose climbed to be in the top ten. David Toms seems to be always just a little short, and it looks to be that way on Sunday. Hunter and Jay Will will be duking this thing out Sunday, I’d say it’s about 50-50 for either.

At the Wegmans, Lorena Ochoa has taken the lead by one over In-Kyung Kim. Hopefully she won’t blow her chance to win (which has been a problem recently, blowing leads on Sunday).

Conditions Worsen at Travelers

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Impeding weather suspends play on Friday.

Wind and rain made a mess out of the TPC at River Highlands today. Gusts up to 35 mph altered shots and the wet conditions made hitting out the rough and making par a near impossibility. The scores reflected the tough conditions with most scores heading over-par. Still, David Toms made a couple of early birdies to take the second round lead along with qualifier Jay Williamson at 8-under.

Rejoice At Low Scores Again

Nobody could catch The Hunter on Thursday.

After a week of over-par scores at Oakmont, it certainly was refreshing to see the pros shoot under-par again. At least now we know that they haven’t forgotten what it’s like to make birdies. And they really ate up the TPC at River Highlands course on Thursday with the leader Hunter Mahan shooting an 8-under 62. Meanwhile in upstate NY, the ladies are playing Wegmans where Christie Kerr is your first round leader shooting a 6-under 66.

Don’t Call It A Comeback

KJ gives us his AND1 impression

It was quite the day for comebacks. First, KJ Choi shot up the leaderboard with a 30 on the front nine and never looked back winning by one stroke at 17-under. Then about an hour later, girl out of nowhere, Nicole Castrale slowly crept up on Lorena Ochoa and when Ochoa faltered, Castrale took control forcing a playoff and out-dueled Ochoa for the win. Very impressive stuff.

Pampling Seizes The Lead

Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi Oi!

With just 18 holes left in the Memorial, Rod Pampling seized control of the lead with several big time birdies on the back nine to finish 4-under for his round and a 3-shot lead at 15-under for the tournament.

Scott Shoots Lights Out

Catch me if you can.

The second round of the Memorial was owned by Adam Scott today shooting a blistering round of 62 to lead at 12-under after two rounds. The photogenic Aussie showed plenty of game to go with his dashing good looks and actually flirted with a round of 59 missing a few makeable 12-foot putts.

Day 1 Drama

Friday, June 1st, 2007

14160740451press5312007103804PM.jpg

FORE!!

Plenty of drama in the first day for both the Memorial and Ginn Tribute today. First Lefty pulled out with a injured wrist, then Zach Johnson pulled out with a bad case of strep throat. At the Ginn Tribute, the big story was Michelle Wie’s 14-over that had her precariously close to the LPGA’s 88 rule (a rule that bans non-tour members for the year if they shoot 88 or higher).

Memorial

Sean O’Hair is a co-leader along with Nick O’Hern and Rod Pampling at 7-under. Ernie is lurking at one back, Kuchar, and Pettersson are at 4-under, big logjam at 3-under including Cink, Garcia, Vij, CH3, Imada and Villegas. Tiger was hot/cold finishing at 2-under with 5 birdies and 3 bogeys. Furyk is at 2-under as well. Phil didn’t look good right from the start and after several hand massages just couldn’t make the pain go away. Zach Johnson struggled through more than half his round before withdrawing due to a bad strep throat and couldn’t even be interviewed. So without those two guys, the field has opened up a little. But tomorrow will be a day if we see Tiger making a charge to get within two or so of the lead. O’Hair is playing with no fear and looks to stay right there through until Sunday. Ernie is stroking it good. At this point, there are a lot of good players out there and the finish is looking to be a good one.

Ginn Tribute

The Pink Panther is again all over the top of the leaderboard. While rookie Angela Park is the current leader at 6-under, Paula Creamer is just two shots off the lead as is world number one Lorena Ochoa. Host Annika Sorenstam marked her return to the Tour after neck and back troubles and shot a respectable par. Of course, all the talk has been about Michelle and that huge number she was about to post, 14-over after 16 holes. She walked off after finishing the 16th and later said she tweaked her wrist. I’m sure that with two holes left, and a strong possibility of going 2-over, her agent advised her to withdraw. Like it or not, Michelle and her camp have carte blanche to do basically whatever they want as long as the LGPA is willing to suck up to her.
