Oakmont Gives Them Nightmares
The site of the 2007 US Open is the hauntingly beautiful Oakmount Country Club in Oakmont, PA. They call the US Open the toughest major of them all and Oakmont gives the word ‘tough’ a whole new meaning.
Oakmont’s reputation as one of the most difficult courses in the world may not even do it justice. It’s famous “Church Pews” bunkers between holes 3 and 4, the undulating ultra-fast greens, the deep rough, the 288-yard par-3 8th hole. Oakmont is both spectacular and feared among the tour pros.
Johnny Miller conquered Oakmont shooting an unbelievable final round of 63 to win the US Open in 1973, in what many consider the best round in major championship history. Ernie Els who won a monday round playoff at Oakmont to win the US Open in 1994 said “That ain’t going to happen in our day and age, I’ll tell you that.”
The winner on Sunday can confidently say that for one week, they were the greatest golfer in the entire world having conquered the mighty Oakmont and 156 of the finest players in the world.
I leave you with a small sampling of what the players will see throughout this week.

Church Pews on holes 3 and 4, feared and revered.

The 288-yard 8th hole, the longest par-3 in championship golf.

The approach on 18 where the Sunday drama will unfold.
