Ricoh Women’s British Open Preview

Here’s looking at you, kid.
The Women’s British Open starts tomorrow at Royal St. Andrews in Scotland. And since it is a major, I think it’s worth at least a dedicated preview post here, no? My gut tells me that the general public is rooting for a second straight Natalie Gulbis victory, I know I am, funky swing and all. But all the heavy hitters will be there and it will be a tough field to crack. Let’s take a look at this stacked field.
Contenders
I haven’t been particularly good at picking winners on the LPGA this year. But what the heck…
Lorena Ochoa is someone that will make the cut, even finish in the top ten, but won’t win it. When the pressure is on, she has a hard time off the tee. You know, that feeling you get when your palms get sweaty, you feel like you’re burning up. That’s what Lorena feels coming down the stretch.
Annika has been playing solid leading up to this. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she won outright. She’s still the best player in the world, her neck has to be feeling a lot better by now.
The Korean contingent will always be a threat. Whether it’s Se Ri Pak or Mi Hyun Kim, or Birdie Kim, etc… They will be somewhere in the leaderboard.
What of the past major champions this year, Morgan Pressel, Suzann Pettersen and Christie Kerr?? All good players, all definitely have legitimate chances, but equally with questions marks.
Don’t Sleep On
Juli Inkster - She gets better with age, what can I say. The soccer mom can still fly that ball, and she loves majors.
Karrie Webb - If it weren’t for Annika, she’d probably have 10 majors herself. Solid player, when her putter gets going, watch out.
You can’t end a post on the Women’s tour without a Michelle Wie mention. Michelle has been improving but in no way is she ready to take one here. If she can stay on par through four rounds, that would be a huge plus.
