Texan Native Leonard Tops Parnevik in Playoff

Oh my Jesper, so close, yet so far.
As I mentioned yesterday, Jesper Parnevik had already blown a lead earlier in the week to Justin Leonard and it happened again today, this time in a much more dramatic fashion. After a 3-shot lead heading into the final round, Parnevik couldn’t hold off the hard charging Texas native who actually took control early in the day and it would be Parnevik who would come from behind to force a playoff on the final hole. After three playoff holes, Leonard emerged as the winner.
Leonard is a two time winner having won in 2000 and 2001 and joins Arnold Palmer as the only three time winners of the Texas Open. A Texan native, the win is even sweeter for Justin who now has two wins on the year. After winning, Leonard had this to say about the significance of the win today, “That’s pretty special. It’s great company to be in. I played pretty solid.”
Parnevik was mostly wild all day chasing tee shots into the tress and needed several recovery shots to stay in contention. Towards the end, it was clear that all the scrambling was taking its toll on Jesper who has not won on the PGA Tour in six years. At the end of his round, Jesper had this to say about his second place finish, “Give the credit to Justin. He didn’t do too much wrong today.”
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Frys.com Open at the TPC at Summerlin. Like this week, don’t expect many big names to be there either.
