Tommy ‘Two Gloves’
This past weekend, Tommy ‘Two Gloves’ Gainey, contestant from The Golf Channel’s Big Break reality TV show, made his debut on the Nationwide Tour at the BMW Pro-Am. While his horrific 5-over 77 on Sunday was forgettable, Two Gloves was in contention for most of the first three rounds.
Many old school golf writers don’t like Two Gloves. There’s the weird swing, the awkward fireman’s grip, of course the two gloves that he wears. And then there’s his southern drawl that makes most people think Two Gloves is just some dumb hick from South Carolina that doesn’t belong on the PGA Tour much less the Nationwide Tour.
But the guy can flat out play, and he can absolutely kill the ball. He’s not one of these golf elitists that played on a stacked NCAA team and comes from a privileged family. The guy worked the assembly line at a factory to pay for practice rounds just so he could continue playing after high school. He’s just a regular joe, a grip it and rip it guy. I like that, and I hope that Two Gloves can break into the big boy Tour for good.
As for The Big Break, he squared off for 9-holes against Ashley Gomes in the finals of the reunion show yesterday. I didn’t watch the finale as I was watching the Cavs/Pistons playoff game but I’m sure Two Gloves didn’t disappoint. I’m out…
