WGC-Bridgestone Preview

Tiger looking to get his groove on this week.
The golfing world is back to relevance now that Tiger Woods is playing at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron (OH) this week (or at least CBS is happy). No question, Tiger is the overwhelming favorite this week, but there are some heavy hitters that will give him a run for his money, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, among others. This week should provide some great golf action as the players tune up for the last major of the year in the PGA Championship, read on for my Yahoo! fantasy picks.
A List
You’d be a complete moron to not have Tiger Woods in your A list this week. Considering he’s won this tournament five out of the last eight years and has never been out of the top-10, it’s an easy pick here. Plus, Tiger always dominates in Ohio, he loves it there. He’s been playing well, coming up the bridesmaid at two majors this year. I’d be hard-pressed to not ride Tiger all four days this week.
For my backup pick I’m going with Vijay Singh. He played well last week, but ran into a hot Jim Furyk on Sunday. Vij looks like he’s hammering the ball well and finding the greens, even his putting is getting better.
Stay away from last week’s winner Jim Furyk. He’s got a sore back and I fear the consecutive weeks is wearing him. He may actually pull out at the last moment, so as to rest for the PGA Championship.
Phil Mickelson is a gamble this week. He could come out gangbusters and challenge Tiger, or he could blow up and miss the cut (see British Open). Ernie is also still a gamble, played well in Europe so far this year but has done nothing in N. America. Sergio Garcia?? Maybe, but he’s still playing with Carnoustie’s ghosts plus the ’sour grapes’ coverage is still hot on him.
B List
Padraig Harrington, Angel Cabrera, Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly.
Hard not to give Padraig a ride after his British Open win, you’re looking at a new man. I would’ve gone with Andres Romero instead of Angel but Andres isn’t listed in Yahoo this week. Angel is playing decent and I expect he will at least make the cut, if not better. Steve and Jerry are solid players that have a chance of contending with Tiger if they can put together four good rounds, something that has been missing so far this year.
C List
Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson.
Went with a couple of Europeans, I like Paul Casey and I think he’s due for a win in N. America eventually. I’m not sold on Henrik Stenson, but I really didn’t see anyone else in the list that jumped out at me. Henrik played well earlier in the year but has dropped off dramatically in the last two months or so.
TV coverage will be the usual Golf Channel on Thu/Fri and CBS on Sat/Sun.
PGA Tour, WGC-Bridgestone, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh
